7 Reasons to Walk Your Horse

There are so many reasons that working your horse in walk is beneficial, and it doesn’t have to be boring! While many programmes suggest a period of walk following injury, we think it’s vital for all horses at all stages of their careers.

Here are some of our favourite reasons to encourage working your horse in walk.

  • There is no moment of suspension in walk, meaning the horse must use their muscles for each individual foot fall
  • Supports good circulation, including the circulation of synovial fluid (which helps to lubricate joints)
  • Minimum stress to joints, but helps your horse gain strength
  • Encourages relaxation and stretching
  • An opportunity to build confidence
  • Supports range of motion in the joints
  • Helps your partnership to develop

There are a few ways you can increase the amount of walk work you do with your horse; whether that is lunging, long reining, walking over poles under saddle, in hand walking, walk hacking and spending more time in walk when schooling.

Walk work can be both fun and rewarding!

We suggest ensuring your horse’s joints are fully supported, especially if you are increasing their workload, so recommend PharmaQuin Joint Complete HA – you can learn more here. And if you’re increasing your own walk work too, our human PharmaQuin might be a good idea too!
