Do You Know if Your Horse Needs a Joint Supplement?

Many horses, especially those with intense workloads, longer careers, or just those who are slightly older, can suffer with joint pain. Some signs of equine joint pain can be subtle or mild, however here are a couple of signs you can look out for.

• Stiffness – this is especially obvious after a period of immobility (for example after being in the stable overnight), and can loosen off with movement
• Reluctance to go forward – horses may be less happy to move forward if there is joint discomfort
• Limited range of motion – this could be shown with a reluctance to bend or flex in the body where the joints are inflamed
• Inflammation & swelling – swelling or heat may be obvious in affected joints and the horse may be sensitive to touch
• Lameness – in any affected limb
• Heat in limbs – a warm limb is a sign of inflammation
• Change in behaviour – a sudden change in behaviour for example becoming spooky, stopping at jumps or increased irritability could be a sign of joint pain
• Problems picking up feet – a horse experiencing joint pain may not be keen on having their feet lifted up (for the farrier or for picking out feet)
