Your horse’s digestive system is a sensitive thing, but with Spring right around the corner and grass beginning to come through, many owners are questioning the best way of changing their horse’s hard feed, grass, or forage.
The main thing to consider when changing your horse’s diet is to do everything very slowly! Changes must be made gradually to help reduce the risk of digestive upset.
Even something as simple as changing hay suppliers needs to be done gradually, with experts recommending mixing old and new hay for a period of days before transitioning fully to the new variety. Most horse owners are aware of the need to change hard feed slowly, but the same must be said for grass and hay.
Grass is now starting to grow thanks to the longer, milder days, along with plenty of rainfall and the promise of some sunshine! When introducing new grass, it’s important to be careful and introduce it gradually – whether that’s by limiting time in the field, using fencing to reduce access, or using a grazing muzzle to control intake.
