January Update from Mari Durward-Akhurst

Wow how are we at the end of January already! As I write this it’s only 200 days to go until the start of Tokyo 2020!! The hard work has already begun, and the first selection event is next month!

With it being a new year and a new decade I thought I would bring some new content to my social media pages. Check out https://www.facebook.com/MariDurwardAkhurstParaDressage/.

I am officially on the World Class Podium Potential Programme as of the 1st of this month. I have started at Bisham Abbey attending strength and conditioning once a week with Henry and Physio once a week with Caryl. The support is amazing and next month I am going to have my first experience of going into the heat chamber!

I aim to expand my public speaking engagements this year and already have two bookings in the diary. I have space so please get in contact with me if you would like me to come and speak at an event. You can contact me on my social media pages (link above).

I decided to step out of my comfort zone big time this month/year! I have become an Ambassador for JustStrong and I have also done my first V Blog! My JustStrong clothing arrived and its fantastic and even sitting in my wheelchair the length is long enough. You can use my discount code: MARAKH10. Check out https://juststrong.com/ and put my discount code in at the check out.

I have continued my mentoring of Sophie and Elan who shared their goals with me at the beginning of the year and through my social media channels I will keep checking in with them every month to see how they are getting on.

I have had a few lessons on Sky this month and he has been going amazingly, better than at the Europeans. He is much more rideable and much rounder through his whole body and I am able to contain the power. As Rob said he just gets better and better! Age is just a number and Sky proves this on a daily basis!!

This month I attended the Grooms Day and the World Class Media Day; both days were great and I learnt so much. It was fantastic to hear more about the flight and what is involved in terms of the horses and Tokyo. Thank you to UK Sport, The National Lottery and Equestrian Team GBR for all of the support and these fantastic opportunities. I learnt so much over all the different sessions of the media day and have lots of ideas for new content for my social media pages. How to carry out good TV and Radio interviews and much more.

Nick Hart from the RVC came out to give the boys their jabs and do their teeth. It was great to catch up with Nick. The RVC have several events coming up; these are on my Facebook page. Please take a look their talks are always very informative.

Bear had his monthly massage from Lee and he loved it; it was also great to hear of the improvements that Lee could see.

I also had a yard visit from Team GBR ahead of squad training next month. They really liked the yard and the super facilities. It was great to have Katie there, Rob and my dad as well as the Trout Rise team. Bear was a star and it was fantastic to hear how much they thought he and I had improved since the last squad training. Hard work does pay off; onward and upwards!

That’s it for this month but next month looks to be even busier with squad training and the first selection trial the Winter Para Dressage Championships at Myerscough (20th-23rd February) in Lancashire. If you are near by and would like to come and watch; there is going to be a superb gala night on the Friday evening.
